closed doors

December 30, 2007

God has closed or is closing two doors. namely where we are to live . our present home the amish landlord wishes to sell and he is giving us first choice. the other is my sons place down town he was going to move and offered it to us to rent. the first situation we can’t afford. we can hardly make rent as it is let alone taxes and huge upkeep. the second he is not quite ready to move. the urgency for him is less.

so we willingly wait on God to open a door.

30 christmas

December 20, 2007

30 years ago Christmas

I was just married that summer, it was wonderful to celebrate a holiday in a new was with someoneyou love and care for. i grew my first poinsettia crop. We were anticipating oysters fresh from the Chesapeake Bay and best of all Jeannette our first daughter was on the way.

I had a job in my family business i was the fourth generation grower to step in. I grew a poinsettia tree for our house and hung balls of boxwood from the ceiling. i also went in the back woods to cut a christmas tree,,,,the manly thing to do. Well i think we went and bought one anyway. What i could find in the woods was a definite Charley Brown tree.

Baltimore had open ice skating rinks we used. My wife and i would go visit my aunt in the nursing home. She had arthritis. I would read scripture and she would mouth the words. We would singas well….fortunately i married well in that regard. The old rugged cross was her favorite.

At work I bagged hundreds of poinsettias for delivery in our trucks. then i delivered some. I also had a route with my grandfather delivering poinsettias to neighbors and family close by. This is one of my favorite things to do. My grandmom would of course make cookies. not a few but a lot of cookies. Ones with dates they are my favorite. Also, very thin sugar cookies in variouse Christmas shapes.

On Christmas morning I started my long tradition of checking the plants in the greenhouse for water needs. Christmas was always celebrated at my grandparents when i waas growing up

these are some of my memories what are some of yours?
